Type: National Research Program under the topic "High-Energy Physics and Accelerator Technologies"

Agreement No: VPP-IZM-CERN-2020/1-0002

Duration: 2020 - 2022

Project Leader: Centre of High-Energy Physics and Accelerator Technologies (HEP&AT Centre) of the Riga Technical University, Dr. phys. Kārlis Dreimanis

Project partners: Institute of Chemical Physics, University of Latvia, Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, Dr.phys. Anatolijs Popovs

Total budget: 836 460  EUR

ISSP UL budget: 126 446  EUR

Project description:

The aim of the project is to strengthen the research capacity in high energy particle physics and accelerator technologies, as well as to create and maintain a sustainable scientific community in both fields of research in Latvia. Project participants will participate in world-class research activities in CERN's scientific laboratories, including high-energy physics research in CERN's ongoing CMS (The Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment, particle detector upgrades, and accelerator technology development projects. Young scientists, including master's and doctoral students of the University of Latvia and RTU, will acquire high-quality knowledge in the mentioned project by carrying out research activity both here in Latvia and at CERN, Switzerland..

The tasks of ISSP UL: Fundamental research in crystal scintillator detectors via involvement in the Crystal Clear Collaboration (CCC). Materials research for detectors to be used in CMS experiments. Cutting edge particle detector materials research.
