Successfully Completed 2nd Deep Science Hackathon 2019 organized by ISSP UL

We are delighted with the very positive atmosphere, wise, attractive and active participants and fantastic ideas.

There were participants from Ukraine, Ecuador, India, Belarus, and of course from Latvia.

Mentors and jury members were representatives from Sweden, Italy, Ukraine, Latvia.

A very wide range of ideas were presented - from different industries and with a very different level of readiness.

Initially, 13 ideas started in Hackathon, and teams were created for 10 ideas. 7 ideas finished on Sunday.

Three ideas were awarded the ISSP UL Support Program, special awards were from the Social Entrepreneurship Accelerator New Door, Commercialization Reactor Fund and Latvian Space Industry Association.

Everyone was the winner!

New in this Hackathon - Banking School students led by lecturer Lauma Muižniece and Dāvis Plotnieks - took part in teamwork with enthusiasm. For them Hackathon was a part of the exam.

Researchers from the ISSP UL also participated. The participants' desire to solve the technological problems attracted them.

Mentors Teresita Qvarnstrom and Lauma Muižniece share their impressions.

Teresita Qvarnstrom, RI.SE., mentor, jury:

An excellent meeting point were enthusiastic, creative people joins competences and develop innovative ideas in a wonderful energizing and motivating atmosphere!

Lauma Muižniece, mentor, Banking School lecturer:

A very good way to exchange ideas and create interdisciplinary teams… From different sectors the viewpoint is different, and this is where you can look at the idea from different perspectives. This is a significant added value for the further development of the idea.

The conclusions are as follows:

We are delighted and proud of the event. We have heard many good words about this hackathon from the participants, mentors and jury.

The most important thing - Deep Science Hackathon will be next year - 7-9.02.2020.

Deep Science Hackathon

We invite you to participate in a development of high-tech in Deep Science Hackathon on February 15-17. We are looking for high-tech ideas based on intelligent materials.

The Deep Science Hackathon will be the second Hackathon in Latvia of that kind. For three days, participants will create interdisciplinary teams and develop ideas with a help of mentors. At the end of the event, they will present their ideas to a jury, investors and stakeholders.

We expect participants with completely fresh ideas as well as those that have reached a prototype stage. We also look forward to welcome participants from companies with existing products that would benefit from further development with the help of advanced technology.

We are looking forward to ideas from the following areas:

  • Smart materials
  • Sensors and actuators
  • Coatings and thin films
  • Photonics
  • Micro / nano electronics
  • Energetics

If you do not have an own idea, you will have the opportunity to join one of the teams with your expertise (physics, materials science, chemistry, business development, design, engineering, programming, marketing, etc.).

All participants will be supported by the international team of mentors. The best ideas will get the opportunity to continue implementing the idea in the ISSP UL support program, as well as valuable awards from supporters.
