ISSP UL is looking for Head of Micro and Nanodevices Laboratory

The Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) is an internationally recognized leader in materials science and cross-disciplinary topics, conducting competitive research, educating students and offering innovative solutions for industrial needs.

ISSP UL is looking for senior scientist as Head of Micro and nanodevices laboratory. Laboratory focuses on state of the art research in:

  • Microfluidics: organs on chips and cancer biomarker
  • Photonics: development of polymer photonics platform and sensors
  • 2D nanodevices: graphene sensors, Transition Metal Dichalcogenides and hBN

Group consists of 2 post-docs, 3 PhD students and several MSc and BSc students.

Most of the work is done in Nanotechnology center: 600 m2 ISO 9001 accredited cleanroom facilities equipped for state of the art micro and nanodevices fabrication.

Job responsibilities

  • Direct your own group members (~12) and supervise the projects within your group;
  • Be responsible for the budget, the planning, and the quality of the projects in the group;
  • Advance research in the field of photonics, nanodevices and microfluidics
  • Present the work at conferences and publish in leading international journals
  • Acquire national and international financial support to expand the group;
  • Actively collaborate with other research groups at institute and Latvia and develop international collaborations
  • Responsible for Micro and nanofabrication course at University of Latvia

Job requirements

Essential

  • PhD in physics, chemistry or materials science;
  • Working experience and a scientific track record in at least one of the following areas: photonics, 2D nanodevices or biosensors
  • Excellent understanding and knowledge of micro and nanofabrication techniques
  • Proven experience in leading and coordinating research and mentoring a team of professionals and students of BSc, MSc and PhD level;
  • Ability to attract external funding on national and international level;
  • Experience in hiring students and researchers
  • Excellent communication, presentation and social skills;
  • Excellent command of English

Desirable

  • Experience participating in interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary research especially with biology
  • Experience in field of microfluidics
  • Previous experience in industry/start-ups will be considered as an advantage
