Summary of the competition in Latvian 

On Saturday, May 16, 2009, the 2nd Solar Cup event took place at the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) – lectures and competition in which 59 teams (out of 86 who had applied earlier) took part. There were 120 participants at the event (110 boys and 10 girls), excluding teachers, parents and supporters. The youngest participant was Andis Zēbergs – a pupil of Jaunjelgava secondary school. Teams from different schools of Latvia took part at the event:

o    Riga (Āgenska State Gymnasium, Riga School of Crafts, Jugla secondary school, Riga 64th secondary school, Riga 84th secondary school, Riga 9th evening (shifts) school, Riga State Gymnasium No 1, Riga Pupils Palace, Riga State Technical School, „Polygraphy Centre”, Gymnasium of Nordic States and Technical Innovation House Annas-2/RTU);

o    A.Upīša Skrīveri Secondary School,

o    Auce Secondary School,

o    Blome Elementary School,

o    Friendly Appeal Liepaja City 5th Secondary School,

o    Jaunjelgava Secondary School,

o    Jelgava State Gymnasium,

o    Mālpils Secondary School,

o    Preiļi State Gymnasium,

o    Priekuļi Secondary School,

o    Pumpuri Secondary School,

o    Saldus City Gymnasium,

The event was opened by a speech of Andris Šternbergs, deputy director of ISSP UL and greeting from Jürgen Zick, professor of University of Kassel (Germany). (In Germany such events are organized for more than a decade already). This was followed by lectures of emerging scientists of ISSP UL about the organic solar photoelectric cells (Andrejs Tokmakovs) and Latvian Solar Energy Testing Site at the Institute of Physical Energetics (Mārtiņš Vanags) and „Sun Plantation” on the roof of ISSP (Jānis Blūms).
