On March 16, at 1 pm, a joint scientific seminar of the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia and the Doctoral School of the University of Latvia "Functional Materials and Nanotechnologies" will take place.

The topic of the seminar: "Magnetically induced flows, deformations, and motility in microscale".

Lecturer: assistant prof., Dr.phys. Guntars Kitenbergs (Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry, University of Latvia).

The rapid development of biomedicine and healthcare of the future demands to find new approaches and methods, often on a single cell level. Use of magnetic fields and materials is particularly interesting to remotely manipulate objects in the desired microscale. However, there is still a lot of unknown in this combination both experimentally and theoretically and gives the motivation for investigating. In this presentation I will show some examples on how we have achieved small scale manipulations with the use of external magnetic fields. I will introduce the basic concepts and their realization in our setting. Examples will include the magnetic micro-convection, magnetic drops and filament-based swimmers. At the end I will briefly explain their applicability, how they compare with other advances of the field and when could we expect to see them on everyday use.

The lecture will be given in English.
