The Institute of Solid State Physics (ISSP) is proud to announce the launch of Smart Windows for Zero Energy Buildings (SWEB), a new initiative to establish a high-quality researcher and expert team by synergistically merging chromogenic Smart Windows materials and complementary competencies at ISSP and bridging the gap between research and technology transfer, as well as provide significant contribution to the efficient and sustainable use of energy.

The goal of the Project is to develop world-leading research on functional materials and their SWEB applications, to advance teaching capacity and to foster institutional governance changes towards excellence and sustainability.

ISSP believes this the SWEB project undertaking will have a positive impact on research excellence, visibility, and attractiveness of ISSP and Latvia in general, thus enhancing participation in ERA. Furthermore, these ambitious research and innovation goals targeting emerging next-generation chromogenic Smart Windows development will lay the foundation for further technical development and innovative production of SWEB in other regions of the EU. Ultimately, society as a whole will benefit from excellent job opportunities for specialists, more youths are drawn to prestigious technology and engineering-oriented higher education, a bridge between R&D and the public, and consumers will indirectly benefit from shorter prototype to market development cycles of targeted chromogenic Smart Windows.

ISSP Thin Film laboratory (TFL) is committed to providing ERA team led by outstanding researcher Dr.Smagul Karazhanov with the resources and support necessary to ensure the success of SWEB project.  To this end, TFL led by Prof. Dr.Juris Purans has assembled a core team of experts in order to successfully implement the project within the period of 5 years.

Project received much attention beyond academic society, due to EU broad perspective in climate neutral development and Green Deal, thus SWEB was noticed by the Ministry of Economics by and Ministry of Education and Science, who’s representatives took part in kick-off meeting on 26th of January 2023 at the ISSP in Riga. Minister of Economics, Ilze Indriksone, in her video message also emphasized the broad prospects of the project’s mission and “necessarity for the common further development of the country”.

Introduction part of the event was followed by the first meeting of the SWEB project Steering Committee, during which ISSP management, SWEB project team and SC members prof.Dr.Aline Rougier (Centre national de la recherche scientifique, France) and Dr.Volker Sittinger (Fraunhofer Institute, Germany) discussed Project’s roadmap, highlighting opportunities to establish strong collaboration with industrial partners across European Union.

Project is funded by the Europen Union (#101087367)
