The annual, Latvia-wide initiative centered around the theme "Energy in Our Lives" this year, allowing students across Latvia to learn about various energy sources, sustainable technologies, and related future professions. The Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) actively participated by opening its doors ans visiting schools to demonstrate that science is not only fascinating but also a vital foundation for our future.
Students visited the institute, gaining a firsthand look at everyday life inside laboratories. Because this year's theme was closely tied to energy technologies, a particularly engaging program took place within the ISSP UL Energy Materials Laboratory and as part of the LACISE project activities. Here, the young participants had the unique opportunity not only to hear researchers' stories but also to assemble batteries with their own hands, gaining a practical understanding of how electrical energy is stored and operated, as well as exploring the potential of hydrogen energy and its role in the future of green energy.
While some students visited the Institute, several ISSP UL researchers traveled to schools across Latvia to share their experiences and inspire the next generation of STEM professionals. Anzelms Zukuls, Leading Researcher at the Energy Materials Laboratory, visited [placeholder for SCHOOL2]. He shared his personal journey into science, encouraging everyone to follow their passions. Maira Elksne, Leading Researcher and Head of the Micro and Nano Devices Laboratory, introduced children to the fascinating world of physics and microelectronics. Meanwhile, Ainārs Knoks, Leading Researcher at the Energy Materials Laboratory, demonstrated to students at the Riga French Lycée how fundamental research translates into real-world innovations.
Initiatives of this kind and direct interaction between scientists and students are an investment in tomorrow – today's curious students are tomorrow's leading experts, engineers, and innovators who will tackle energy and sustainability challenges. By inspiring youth with exciting science, ISSP UL helps build a smarter, greener, and more energy-efficient Latvia.
