On September 25, the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) hosted the annual European Researchers’ Night. Around a thousand visitors came through the less than favourable weather conditions to witness fascinating demonstrations, take part in intriguing experiments, and all in all, learn more about the nature of science.
With this year’s theme, "Between Molecules and Colours," the event offered a diverse and interactive spectrum of physics. Families, students, and enthusiasts embarked on an unforgettable journey where science could be seen, tasted, and experienced firsthand. Highlights included a spectacular science show, as well as ultra-violet illuminated rooms where guests enjoyed nitrogen-frozen popcorn and luminescent drinks.
Throughout the evening, researchers showcased cutting-edge materials and future technologies, encouraging visitors to actively participate. Guests learned about smart windows that self-darken to cool rooms on hot summer days, observed how optical materials and nanocoatings impact daily life, and explored future methods for purifying water from oil products. The most adventurous attendees ignited hydrogen bubbles, competed in a hydrogen quiz, assembled their own batteries, and tested their logical thinking in a science-themed escape room and BioPhoT platform detective puzzles.
The event was part of the University of Latvia’s "Aurora Nexus" project, funded for the first time by the European Commission, which embraces the New European Bauhaus initiative by connecting science, art, technology, and society. The night was also supported by the SWEB, FeLow-D, and LACISE projects, alongside the BioPhoT platform and the ISSP UL Foundation.
Throughout this exciting evening, it was clear that the passion for science and innovation shines bright in the eyes of our scientists, but even more importantly, it is shared by the children and their parents, students, and the general public at large. Thank you to all visitors for your enthusiasm, great questions, and for creating such an outstanding atmosphere!
