Extra-curricular activities in the name of science & education are no stranger to most scientists – ISSP UL researchers are no different. Just recently, thirty of Latvia’s top-performing high school students gathered in Slampe, Latvia for the 59th iteration of the "ALFA" summer camp that’s led by our very own Virgīnija Vītola, Leading Researcher at the Laboratory of Optical Materials.
The two-week intensive programme featured dynamic, interactive classes on topics ranging from quantum computing and quantum chemistry to ethical hacking. The prestigious lecturer lineup included cybersecurity expert Kirils Solovjovs, chemistry professor Agris Bērziņš, physics professor Vjačeslavs Kaščejevs, and computer scientist Andris Ambainis.
"We wanted to broaden the participants' horizons, so they see how to apply their skills and knowledge in the future. Here, kids can meet their future professors and potentially even future employers," emphasizes camp director Virgīnija Vītola.
Beyond the academic lectures, the program included evening team-building activities – like competitive Sudoku and talent shows – helping the young bright minds form lasting friendships and networks.
Admission to the camp is a reward for 10th and 11th-grade students who top national Olympiads across physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and programming, as well as scientific research paper competitions.
Many of today’s leading lecturers were once camp participants themselves, returning years later as established researchers to mentor the next generation. Virgīnija, who also teaches physics and electronics at the RTU Engineering High School alongside her research on luminescent materials at ISSP UL, highlights the vital role of active researchers in youth education:
"Young students are best inspired when science is made human, understandable, and connected to real life. It is invaluable when educators themselves work in research or industry and can share their direct experiences."
Participation in the camp was organized under the VIAA-implemented ESF+ project No. 4.2.2.3/1/24/I/001 "Establishment of a Professional Support System for Educators."
