On 16 April, the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) hosted a meeting between the Patent Office of the Republic of Latvia and technology transfer office representatives from several leading Latvian universities and research institutions, including ISSP UL, the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Rīga Stradiņš University, Daugavpils University, the Latvia Institute of Organic Synthesis, and Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies.

As this was a follow-up to previous discussions, the objective was to advance ongoing talks and share updates on streamlining the patent application process to enable Latvian universities and research institutions to file patents more efficiently, ensuring that new innovations and technologies reach the market sooner.

The productive discussions were followed by a tour of the ISSP UL laboratories, highlighting the Institute’s contribution to innovation. This included BioPhoT projects carried out at ISSP UL, such as DARS, commercialization success stories, like Spectromarine, and infrastructure development aimed at bridging the gap between research and industry, demonstrated by the newly launched microfluidics pilot line.

Director of the Patent Office of the Republic of Latvia Agris Batalauskis emphasized during the meeting: “Such discussions are important because they help identify current topics for TTO training while also promoting the development of well-considered proposals for improving regulatory frameworks”.
