Project identification number and title:
Development of a biotechnology-based, naturally derived sunscreen product that replaces synthetic materials in cosmetics
The research is being implemented within the framework of the project by SIA "VMKC". Project No. JP2_24, CFLA contract No. 5.1.1.2.i.0/2/24/A/CFLA/004.
Project duration: 01.10.2024 – 31.12.2026.
Project leader: SIA “Labrains”
Project partners: Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL)
Responsible person from ISSP UL: Aleksejs Zolotarjovs
Total funding: 146 840,00 EUR, including the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism co-financing of 107 992,00 EUR
Project description:
The goal of the project is to develop one smart dispersion and one smart material production technology for sunscreen cosmetic products, not only reducing the CO2 footprint (~30% lower CO2 e/kg), but also ensuring a more coral-friendly sunscreen protection system (with non-nano ZnO and non-nano TiO2).

PROJECT PROGRESS
Time period: 01.10.2025. - 31.12.2025.
During the reporting period, the stability analysis of the developed formulations was completed and microbiological preservative efficacy tests were performed. Two cream samples were sent to an external laboratory (J.S. HAMILTON POLAND Sp. z o.o. Testing Laboratory) for microbiological preservative efficacy testing, and testing reports were received confirming the effectiveness of the preservatives used in the cosmetic product and compliance with criterion “A”.
Time period: 01.07.2025. - 30.09.2025.
Within Activity 4 of the project, the environmentally friendly, biotechnology-derived active substances selected for their sun protection factor–enhancing properties (SPF boosters) were mixed in the company’s laboratory with the base cream developed under Activity 2 to determine their compatibility. The application of the active substances in various bases was evaluated. Product blends containing the active substances were developed. A product mixture with the active substances has been formulated.
