Project description:

The MARLIN project aims to develop an adaptive near-infrared laser-based underwater communication system for short- to medium-range operation in low-visibility environments. It addresses key limitations of acoustic and blue-green optical links by enabling high-speed, low-latency, and undetectable data exchange between divers and autonomous vehicles. MARLIN integrates adaptive optical control, modulation switching, and environmental sensing within a compact hemispherical 4×4 photonic module mountable on diver propulsion vehicles. The project targets TRL4 validation through laboratory and field testing under various water conditions. Scientifically, it advances understanding of infrared light propagation in turbid water and real-time adaptive modulation. Socio-economically, it strengthens Latvia’s dual-use photonics capacity by providing safe, environmentally friendly, and stealth underwater communication solutions for research, rescue, industrial, and defence applications. MARLIN lays the foundation for TRL9 system development and future commercialization.
