A visit from first-year students of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Latvia to the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) has by now become an annual tradition. The visit offers students an opportunity to gain deeper insight into the field of materials science, as well as into research and career opportunities.
During the tour, students learned how spectroscopic equipment enables the analysis of materials using light. They also gained insight into the development and testing of new batteries, thin film fabrication using magnetron sputtering, and lithography processes carried out in our cleanrooms, which are used to create micro- and nano-scale devices.
Such cooperation between ISSP UL and the University of Latvia is mutually beneficial: the students are able to see a real research environment with their own eyes and ask questions directly to field experts, while ISSP UL contributes to the education and development of the next generation of specialists in Latvia.
