In celebration of Latvia’s Independence Day, the government has announced this year’s Cabinet of Ministers Awards recognizing outstanding professionals in research and education. Among the recipients is Dr. habil. phys. Andris Šternbergs, Deputy Director for Science and Leading Researcher at the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL), as well as Vice President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Šternbergs receives this national award for his remarkable contributions to the advancement of science and to the benefit of Latvian society, particularly in the fields of materials science and nanotechnology. He is one of Latvia’s most distinguished physicists, whose work has significantly advanced the study of functional materials and nanotechnologies. His research spans both fundamental and applied directions, contributing to innovation and the development of sustainable technologies.
Among his key achievements is the leading role he played in establishing the European Commission’s Centres of Excellence projects CAMART and CAMART², which have positioned the ISSP UL among Europe’s most recognized materials science research institutions.
