On October 14, representatives from Latvian organizations driving research excellence and technological innovation joined leading policymakers, researchers, and innovators in Brussels at the Northern Prospects – Enhancing Civil Security with AI conference. It’s a platform for exploring how AI and digital innovation can transform civil protection, strengthen crisis preparedness, and foster cross-sector cooperation across the Nordic-Baltic region and the EU.
Among the institutions and companies representing Latvia – such as Riga Technical University, LMT, Tet – the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) was also represented by our Head of the Infrastructure Department Valdis Korsaks. The discussions spotlighted AI applications for risk assessment, early warning systems, and emergency response, alongside best practices and public–private partnerships strengthening Europe’s resilience.
After the conference, ISSP UL was also part of a meeting with Member of the European Parliament Mārtiņš Staķis to discuss what Latvia can offer in terms of civil security R&D, as well as talk about our flagship EU-funded projects.
ISSP UL, as a member of the Latvian IT Cluster and a participant in its cooperation network, has concluded an agreement to take part in the activities of Project No. 5.1.1.2.i.0/3/24/A/CFLA/010, “Cluster Support for the Internationalisation and Development of the ICT Sector”. The aim of the project is to increase private research and development expenditure through targeted public investments that foster the development of new products and technologies, as well as the transfer of knowledge into the economy. The project is co-financed by the European Union Recovery Fund.
