On 26 September, the European Researchers’ Night at the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) saw a record number of visitors, welcoming more than a thousand science enthusiasts who actively participated in interactive activities, joined experiments, and altogether “discovered their researcher gene” in line with this year’s central theme.

Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed a fire show, challenged themselves in the laser maze and escape room, and explored various experiments with light, temperature, and the latest technologies developed at the institute – such as microfluidic chips and touch-sensitive sensors. A unique opportunity was also given to the social media contest winners, who took part in a hands-on workshop where they created their own microfluidic chips from caramel and filled them with chocolate, turning them into a one-of-a-kind treat. Visitors also showed great interest in the researcher presentations held in the 2nd floor hall – ISSP UL scientists introduced audiences to specific research topics (the micro- and nano-world, light technologies), their BioPhoT innovation projects, and even lab “mishaps” that taught them valuable lessons.

This year’s event also drew wide attention from Latvian media, with several teams broadcasting live reports that captured the galvanized atmosphere and informed the public about future innovations and the role of science in everyday life. While the fire show was unfolding outside, 360TV interviewed Virgīnija Vītola, Leading Researcher at the Laboratory of Optical Materials. Latvian National Television spoke with Annamarija Trausa, Researcher at the Laboratory of Optical Materials, while also showcasing several light-related activities in the 4th floor lobby. TV3 captured the smokey snacks and luminescent drinks served on the 1st floor, and invited ISSP UL Director Andris Anspoks for an interview.

ISSP UL extends its gratitude to all visitors, media outlets, and cooperation partners whose involvement made this year’s Researchers’ Night the most ambitious one to date. The event’s results highlight the interest in science and its practical applications, inspiring us to continue the tradition in the coming years.

This year’s exciting and engaging Researchers’ Night at ISSP UL was made possible thanks to ISSP UL Found, SWEB project, FeLow-D project, BioPhoT platform, LACISE project, and Brain Games.
