On September 11, the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) hosted a dynamic BioPhoT workshop on dual-use applications (Dual Use Deep Dive Sprint). The aim was to prepare ideas for dual (civil and military) applications – based on industry needs – for submission as research and innovation projects in the 2nd BioPhoT call.

Participants had the opportunity to meet representatives from the defence sector, learn about current industry needs (such as logistics and communication, drones, sensors, biotechnology, etc.), and collectively refine their ideas and pitch presentations with feedback from experts and mentors.

The workshop featured presentations from:

  • Emīls Paupe-Balodis, drone expert, who talked about the major threats and challenges in Ukraine;

  • Modris Kairišs, Latvian National Armed Forces Major & Head of the Autonomous Systems Competence Center, who presented plans of the new competence center and areas of interest;

  • Dmitrijs Ščegoļevs, member of the National Guard, Bauska 53rd KB CIMIC, who outlined the format and directions of modern warfare, with justification of the aspects that need attention in both the short and long term.
