Who we are
FeLow-D (Low-Dimensional Ferroelectrics for Advanced Electronic and Biomedical Devices) is a Horizon Europe ERA Chair project focused on transforming the ferroelectric research group (FER) at ISSP UL into a globally recognized center of excellence. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Andrei Kholkin the project aims to unlock the potential of low-dimensional ferroelectric materials for next-generation technologies in electronics, sensing, energy and biomedical applications.
The project is closely aligned with the EU’s goal of “Deepening the ERA” by strengthening R&I ecosystems, fostering open knowledge sharing, enabling talent circulation and enhancing academic-industry cooperation.
The Laboratory of Optical Materials (OML) at ISSP UL is a research hub specializing in advanced materials for electronics, photonics and optoelectronics. As a core contributor to FeLow-D, the lab supports materials discovery, nanoscale characterization, and optical device integration in the context of low-dimensional ferroelectrics.
The position
We are seeking a highly qualified scientific coordinator to join the Laboratory of Optical Materials and contribute to the scientific and strategic execution of the FeLow-D project. This hybrid role includes both project implementation and scientific support, with a limited research component (~10%) in alignment with the candidate’s expertise in ferroelectric nanomaterials and soft-matter piezoelectrics.
Within the team, your main responsibilities will be
Project coordination & strategic development
Support the ERA Chair Holder in executing the FeLow-D roadmap
Organize and monitor project implementation, including coordination of milestones and deliverables
Draft new collaborative research and innovation proposals (Horizon Europe, COST, MSCA, etc.)
Manage internal communication between scientific, administrative, and technical teams
Support institutional reforms and talent integration within ISSP UL
Liaise with international partners from academia and industry to strengthen cooperation
Scientific communication & outreach
Lead science communication activities: public engagement, policy briefs, press releases, scientific articles
Prepare content for project website and online dissemination
Organize scientific workshops, training schools, and knowledge-transfer events
Research (up to 10%)
Participate in collaborative research projects related to ferroelectric bio-inspired nanomaterials or hybrid piezoelectric systems
Contribute to modeling, experimental characterization, or manuscript preparation within the lab’s scope
Requirements
PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields
Proven experience in EU-funded project participation
Strong background in research related to ferroelectrics, peptide materials, or nanostructured systems
Fluent in English, with excellent scientific writing and communication skills
Demonstrated capacity to manage academic writing, research events and coordinate cross-functional teams
What would make you shine
Experience in proposal writing and strategy development for European R&I calls
Background in biomaterials, self-assembled systems, or hybrid piezoelectric platforms
Editorial or peer-review experience for international journals
Familiarity with project monitoring tools (Gantt charts, DMPs, KPIs)
Self-driven and structured approach with attention to detail
Ability to adapt across disciplines and organizational cultures
Compensation and benefits
Competitive salary package starting EUR18 per hour
Health insurance
Access to state-of-the-art materials research facilities
International working environment with professional development opportunities
Location
ISSP UL, Kengaraga 8, LV-1063 Riga, Republic of Latvia
How to apply
