The 11 May episode of Latvian Radio 1’s science programme Zināmais nezināmajā (The Known in the Unknown) opened with a feature on laser radiation. To explore how lasers are studied in the lab, the programme had Anatolijs Šarakovskis, Head of the Spectroscopy Laboratory at the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL), share his expertise.
During their visit to the lab, journalists learned about the research of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum and the potential of a truly powerful laser. “When we say ‘laser’, the first thing that usually comes to mind is a little pointer used in schools or for entertainment. This laser is very different – it allows us to generate radiation across a continuous range, from ultraviolet to infrared,” explained Anatolijs.
The feature also highlighted the real-world applications of lasers in manufacturing, as well as medicine, where precise temperature control is essential for procedures such as laser surgery.
