The President of Latvia visits ISSP UL
On 28 May, the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) had the honour to host the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs. During his visit, the President learned more about the daily work of our laboratories and the cleanrooms, the Institute's success stories, and how science influences society.
The delegation started with a tour of the Energy Materials and Spectroscopy laboratories, where they got acquainted with innovations in battery sustainability and efficiency, as well as Spectromarine and the TESS sensor, which have already been successfully implemented in industry.
In the 2nd floor hall, the President also met PhD students preparing to defend their theses. The visit continued in the Micro and Nano Devices laboratory, where the delegation got to better know organ-on-chip technology and the achievements in microfluidics by Cellbox Labs, as well as the Cleanrooms, where the President wore special coveralls to see the work of scientists up close.
“The Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia is one of the key driving forces behind the development of Latvia’s high-tech sector. [..] At the Institute, I met many young researchers who work with passion and enthusiasm on issues relevant to both businesses and society," says the President.
We are always proud to showcase the Institute’s work and hope that this visit will inspire even greater public understanding and support for science. The President's entry in the Institute's guestbook summarizes it quite well: “Solid state physics is a mighty thing.”
