On 6 May, the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) hosted an event to celebrate the Applied Research Programme Component 2 in the areas of ICT and Smart Energy project, otherwise known as LACISE.

The extensive research programme is carried out in close cooperation between Swiss and Latvian institutions. Its objectives are to strengthen Latvia's scientific potential and growth, promote the development of innovative solutions and cooperation with industry, thus investing in the economy, environmentalism and a strong energy sector.

Representatives of the Institute welcomed their colleagues from Swiss collaborating institutions, local science centres and industry players to sign a project memorandum, establish new contacts, and get to know each other a little better.

After introductory speeches and presentations about the involved parties, the guests also had a productive panel discussion on what challenges can be targeted in the energy sector, best talent acquisition practices for science, and what methods the participants see being applied to ensure smooth collaboration.

Guests also had the opportunity to take a tour of the ISSP UL facilities, where our researchers gave a more in-depth introduction to the thin film, energy materials, and spectroscopy laboratories.

The Latvian-Swiss cooperation project LACISE (2025-2029) will focus on solving today's most pressing energy problems and educating the next generation of scientists, as well as fostering close collaboration between Latvian and Swiss scientists from the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL), Institute of Electronics and Computer Science (EDI), Riga Technical University (RTU), Paul Scheurer Institute (PSI), Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM).
