On 17 April, Professor Ignacio R. Matías, a specialist in fiber optic sensors from the University of Navarre, visited the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) to give a lecture on "Advances in lossy mode resonance sensors".

Lossy mode resonance is an optical phenomenon in which certain light modes that are progressing through a waveguide begin to be guided in a thin film deposited on said waveguide under certain conditions. An important property that LMRs have is that they can be guided into the thin film with both magnetic (TM) and electrical (TE) polarized light.

The lecture also covered the numerous applications of LMR – biosensors, immunosensors and other sensors that can detect refractive indices voltage, pH, humidity, or chemical species.
